"Not bad."
The rifle feels incredibly heavy in his hands and he can't take his eyes of the dead deer. He killed it. He lifted the rifle and shot it and it dropped dead instantly. A clean shot. He killed an animal.
His stomach is flip-flopping uncomfortably and he's biting back the tears that threaten to burst from his eyes. He's a killer now, a murderer, but his father said "Not bad" and that's... that's the closest thing to praise he's ever gotten and he can't help it - can't help the oddly shaped sense of pride that's settling in his chest.
He killed a deer, but there's plenty of deer and he would kill them all just to hear those words again. He's a hunter now.
"Beginners luck," says Egon - but there's jealousy in that statement and that too is sweet for Eskil to hear. So he doesn't mind when his father turns his back on them and Egon pinches him hard and whispers; "I'm going to get you for this," in his ear.
